And right now, you are probably pretty fed up with the phone. But every phone has its issues, and overall, this is still a great phone. Don’t count it out just yet. We can get through this. Let’s look at the bright side for just a second. You have this beautiful phone; not only regarding looks, but also quality and originality. HTC has improved its software, and it is evident on this M8. While it’s true the phone is no spring chicken anymore, it still has a lot to offer.

Problem 1: Freezing, Slow Performing, Lagging M8

Perhaps it’s a favor to better help me empathize (as if I had forgotten how irritating it is to have any sort of slow-responding device), but as I am typing this, it is coming across my screen really slowly. Something is wrong with my Internet or computer. It’s hard to keep your respect and patience for any lagging device in this day and age. The best thing ever is fixing it, though.

Solution:

Soft Reset

Most of the time a soft reset will cause your phone to snap out of its stupor. Long-press the Power key for approximately 10-15 seconds.

Clear App Cache

From Settings, go to Applications.Find App Manager. Swipe to find ALL, then select the app causing issues.Tap Clear Cache. Press OK, then Clear Data.

Disable or Uninstall Problematic or Unneeded Apps

If you have used an app recently that was acting a little funny or you really don’t need anymore, you can long press its icon in the app tray and it will give you the option to uninstall. You may need to drag it to the Uninstall section.Depending on the version of Android you are using, you may also just be able to transfer some apps to the SD card.

Hard Reset

If that doesn’t cut it, consider performing a hard reset. This wipes data so you might want to backup what you wish to save! This method also functions to reset the M8’s password if you have forgotten it.Power down the M8, then press and hold the Volume Down + Power keys simultaneously.Let go of the Power key first, then release all keys when you see the three Android icons.Locate and select Factory Reset. Use the Volume key to navigate and the Power button to make a selection.

Problem 2: Display Doldrums

Sometimes certain settings within an app will try to take over your phone. One such setting is the negative filter within the camera app. Dead pixels are another display issue reported. Let’s regain control.

Solution:

Burn the Dead

For dead pixels, some people have found a solution in leaving the screen on for at least thirty minutes, and on full brightness. The rationale behind this approach is to burn out those dead pixels.

Try an App

Check out Dead Pixel Detect & Fix Dead Pixel Detect & Fix

Replace

For problems with dead pixels, you may need to replace your phone.

Negative Display

For issues with a negative display, try going to Settings>Accessibility>Negative Colors.Turn this setting off.

Problem 3: Touchscreen Troubles

The screen is a lot of what makes this phone so attractive, but you still need it to work and not merely look pretty. It needs to also respond to your touch. If it truly is the hardware, it could be next to impossible for you to repair and replacement of parts may be necessary. However, sometimes it doesn’t have to be so drastic.

Solution:

Restart

It might seem like the IT person’s scapegoat, but it truly works a large percentage of the time. Start with a soft reset, where the phone is only off for about 10 seconds. You can also perform a hard-reset, but don’t forget to backup anything you would like to save. This will wipe your phone.

Remove any Interference

Remember, this screen relies on touch. Help the screen help you by ridding the phone of any screen protector or case that could hinder your Edge’s ability to sense your fingers.

Perform Diagnostics

The HTC One M8 actually does have a hidden diagnostic menu. To gain access, locate your phone’s Dialer icon. You are about to make a strange phone call to your phone’s troubleshooting menu. Dial * ##2664##. The touch screen diagnostic menu should appear. You can also dial ##3424##* to access the more general function menu. This may not work for all carriers, firmware, or operating systems.

Problem 4: Poor Call Quality

It is very frustrating to try to carry on a conversation with someone you can’t hear. Some users have reported issues with the speaker volume being very low. Adjusting call volume is usually easy, and there are a few tricks to try for problems with echoes or noise.

Solution:

Put on Hearing Aids

We’re not suggesting that you are old. We are suggesting that you visit Settings>Call, and turn Hearing Aids Mode on.

Try Again

If there is echoing or noise, or if your caller’s voice sounds like an Ewok gargling maple syrup, you are most likely experiencing issues with network link quality. Try hanging up and dialing again. Hopefully, you will be switched to a better network link.

Clean Your Speaker

Use compressed air to remove anything from the speaker that doesn’t belong. Turn Up the Volume

Use the volume buttons on the side of your phone to make an adjustment, even during the call.Try holding the phone in various positions next to your ear to find the right spot.If all else fails, try an app like Ultimate Volume Booster.

Ultimate Volume Booster

Try Bluetooth

Try a Bluetooth headset as a workaround.

Problem 5: Baffling Battery

In researching the most common issues with this phone, I repeatedly saw complaints about the battery. Sometimes the battery gets a bad rap though, and the problem is actually the charger.

Solution:

Check Charger

If your M8 will charge (i.e. you see the charging icon and/or other hopeful signs of life), let it do so for at least 10-30 minutes. The charger that came with your M8 should work, at least initially. If you think that charger may be the problem, try a different one.If your M8 is still under warranty (which at this point is definitely iffy) and your charger is faulty, have the company send you a new one while you can.Charging requires a good connection, so you will need to ensure that the plug on the end of the charger fits properly. Sometimes jiggling the plug within its jack may enable a connection, but not if the problem is located more internally. Additionally, jarring this area of your M8 could potentially cause even more damage. If your phone will charge via a USB connection to your computer, the problem is probably your wall or car charger. If nothing delivers a charge to your phone, it could be the port or the phone itself.

Contact Your Dealer

If your phone won’t hold a charge, it’s most likely one of two things—the battery itself, or the charger. If your phone is still under warranty, you might as well take advantage of that while you can.

Watch Temperature

Especially while the phone is charging, pay attention to its environment. You don’t want it to be too hot or too cold. The phone’s temperature should never dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or above 113 degrees. In high-temperature environments, the battery life will be depleted.

Uninstall Apps

Rule out any problem apps, especially one you might have installed recently. See if you experience the same problem while in Safe Mode. If not, you will need to uninstall the app you think is the culprit. To uninstall an app, tap and hold the app.Drag it to the Uninstall button and release.Confirm the uninstall.

Optimize Battery

Use an app to reduce battery energy drain. One such app that will assist you is called Greenify. The download is below. You will have to accept the Terms and Conditions, but then you can determine which apps you want to hibernate. Simply press the + icon.Long-press an app until it turns green, and then select all of the other apps you wish to put to sleep.Click on the checkmark icon located in the upper-right hand corner. If your device is not rooted, you will want to read the popup window.Press Force Stop on the App Info screen.Tap OK to finally hibernate the app(s).

Problem 6: Problems After Update

Common problems users have reported include instability, slowness, and Wi-Fi issues.

Solution:

Soft Reset

Most of the time you will see a marked improvement when you turn the phone back on. Long-press the Power key for approximately 10-15 seconds.

Clear Cache Partition

Turn the M8 completely off. Now long-press the Volume Down key.Press and release the Power key. Release the Volume Down key only when you see three Android images.Use the Volume Down key to select Recovery and the Power button to confirm. When you see a red triangle icon, press Volume Up and Power simultaneously.Press the Volume Down key three times to reach Wipe Cache Partition.Press the Power button to confirm, and wait until the phone tells you it’s finished.

Hard Reset

If that doesn’t cut it, consider performing a hard reset. This wipes data so you might want to backup what you wish to save! This method also functions to reset the M8’s password if you have forgotten it.Power down the M8, then press and hold the Volume Down + Power keys simultaneously. It’s okay to let go of the Power key first.Release all keys when you see the three Android icons.Locate and select Factory Reset. Use the Volume key to navigate and the Power button to make a selection.

Problem 7: Issues Sending or Receiving Calls, Texts, or Videos

We still rely on our devices to communicate even though they can now do so much more. This is still essentially a phone, and it should allow you to make a phone call, or send a message. Or upload a video of your latest dance moves. These things are important.

Solution:

Clear App Data

If the problem seems to be with one application and that application alone, try clearing the cache and app data of that app first. For instance, if you can hear your M8 ringing, but the call screen isn’t showing itself, try addressing the issue with the Dialer app first. From Settings, go to App Manager.Swipe right to get to the ALL tab.Select the app, then look for the App Info screen.Tap Clear Cache, OK, and Clear Data.

Wipe Cache

Especially if this is occurring after an update, wiping the cache partition can solve a variety of ills. Particularly, this usually works to resolve the common problem of having to dial a phone number twice just to make one call.Boot into Recovery Mode by holding the Power and Volume Down buttons together.Release the Power key first, and the Volume Down key when the three Android icons display.Use the Volume buttons to highlight the Wipe Cache Partition and Power to select it.Now highlight Reboot System Now and press Power.

Contact Carrier

Especially if your issue arises after making a switch in providers, contact your carrier to ensure the proper configuration for these services. For instance, if you switch from Verizon to AT&T and suddenly you experience problems sending SMS using the network, contact AT&T.Your account will need to be in good standing, of course. Pay those bills on time.

Turn on Mobile Data

Picture and video files can get quite hefty, and often require the use of mobile data.

Problem 8: SIM Card Situation

Another all-too-common grievance is the No SIM Card error, in which the phone randomly fails to detect the SIM card that actually is in the correct spot.

Solution:

Reinsert SIM

Take the SIM card out and replace it so that hopefully the M8 will sense its presence.

Clean SIM Card

Clean the SIM card and its gold contacts with a cloth dampened by rubbing alcohol.

Thicken the SIM

If the issue is that the SIM card has too much room and does not sit snugly in its tray, it may prove helpful to apply a few layers of tape to the card itself. Do not put the tap on the gold contacts side!

Airplane Mode

For some reason, many people have discovered a relationship between this problem and the seemingly unrelated Airplane Mode setting. From within Settings, toggle Airplane Mode on and off.

Problem 9: Random Crashing

Your phone is suddenly rebooting, but you never asked it to—again.

Solution:

Eliminate Bad Apps

Go to Settings>Power>Usage and investigate which apps are using resources disproportionately. Get rid of them.

Factory Reset

The short way is Settings>Backup & Reset>Reset Phone>Erase All Data.
